Housing information for students

Summer 2020 Residence

Students who were unable to move out during the Winter 2021 Semester and have nowhere else to go, have been allowed to stay in Residence. The Housing staff are in regular communication with all students who remain in Residence over the summer months.

Students who remain in Residence are asked to practice physical distancing and other precautionary measures as advised by the Provincial Health Officer.

Tim Horton's, Stacker's Market, and the Agora Dining Hall are now closed for the summer. You will need to obtain your own groceries and prepare your own meals if you continue to live on campus over the summer months.

At this time, you may not have daily or overnight guests in Residence. Friends and family assisting with the move-out process are permitted to enter the buildings only while helping with move-out.

Fall 2020 and?Winter 2021 Residence

The following procedures and updates take into consideration the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community.

  • Deadline to cancel a Winter 2021 Housing application and receive a refund of your deposit and application fees is November 1, 2020.?

Meal plans

Meal plans are available for the upcoming school year. Please visit the Food Services website for details.?

Housing capacity

UNBC Residence will be open at 50% occupancy for the Fall semester. We anticipated this and sent offers to students accordingly, so we have not had to cancel any offers due to this capacity change. There will be a maximum of two students per four-bedroom suite.

Despite fewer people in each of our Residence buildings to encourage physical distancing, our student and professional staff will be here for you. We will maintain our commitment to create a fun, supportive and safe space with engaging activities and programs throughout the semester.

Move-in dates are scheduled for September 4, 7 and 8. Move-in times will be booked and staggered throughout each day in order to practice safe distancing and follow cleaning and sanitizing protocol.

Move-in appointment booking

Each student must book their move-in date and time, which you will expected to adhere to. Because of safety requirements surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to be flexible with your move-in times. If you arrive outside of your booked move-in appointment, you will be asked to wait until your designated day and time. Students will receive an email by August 7 with information on how to book their move-in day and time.

A maximum of two (2) family members or friends will be allowed to accompany and assist you during your move-in.

Guests in Residence

Guests are limited to those who are already living in one of the UNBC Residence buildings; and each resident is allowed a maximum of one (1) daytime guest at a time. Unfortunately, non-Residence guests (those who do not already live on campus) will NOT be permitted at this time.?

Safety measures in Residence

We will continue to provide the services and amenities that align with guidance from health authorities, and help create a healthy, safe and supportive community environment. In addition to the reduced overall number of residents, here are some of the things we are doing:

  • Enhanced cleaning and sanitizing throughout all common areas.
  • Additional hand sanitizer dispensers throughout Residence.?
  • Signage and information campaigns promoting physical distancing, hand-washing and safety protocols.
  • Elevator protocols have been adjusted and guidelines have been posted.
  • All Housing and Residence life staff have been trained to refer residents with cold or flu-like symptoms to the appropriate health care professional.

Quarantine (self-isolation) in Residence

All individuals arriving to Canada are required by the Canadian Government to quarantine (self-isolate) for 14 days and to self-monitor for symptoms. This requirement includes UNBC Residence students arriving from outside of Canada, whether they are returning to campus, or moving in for the first time.

If you are arriving from outside Canada, you must connect with the UNBC International department for assistance with your quarantine.?

At this time, UNBC Residences are not able to accommodate the required 14-day quarantine (self-isolation) in Residence prior to Fall semester move-in.

Illness in Residence

A number of self-contained suites have been set aside for residents in the event of illness that may require self-isolation/quarantine support during the Fall 2020 semester. If this occurs, we will work closely with Northern Health to ensure all safety precautions are taken for ill individuals and other residents. Student residents who are ill are asked to contact the Housing Office for more information.

Please feel free to reach out to the Housing and Residence Life Team for support and guidance. Support services for students are available both on and off-campus.
